Samurai Coat - "Karuta"
Samurai Coat - "Karuta"
ART INSPIRATION
"Samurai armour comprised of square or rectangular plates of armour which resembled traditional Japanese playing cards, thus the armour was named ‘Karuta’, derived from Portuguese word ‘carta’ (card). The Samurai had 2 shields, and 2 swords.
The metallic fabric on the sleeves represents the protection provided to a Samurai from the metal plates, their shields and by their mastery of their sword.
The body of the coat is hand painted with thick layers of paint and incrusted with crystal beads. By applying colourful layers of paint , I wanted to reflect the juxtaposed life journey of a Samurai warrior, of privilege, reverence, expectation, servitude, skill, power, life and death, and to bear the imprints of the feelings and experiences, which we all accumulate on our journey of life."

THE CUT
The geometrical simplicity of this cut is a modern adaptation of a Samurai overcoat. This versatile and relaxed coat has a high collar, the hem line is slightly longer at the back, there are long side slits to allow freedom of movement, and the shoulder line is relaxed and comfortable to accommodate a chunky sweater underneath, making this coat perfect for cooler seasons and layering.
Please note: Some lookbook images and videos only show the cut, not the individual design. For individual design, please refer to the top of the product gallery.
